New Sorting Machine at Pitcher Street Post Office in Utica

UTICA, N.Y. — The Pitcher Street Post Office in Utica now features a new package sorting machine.

NEWSChannel 2 had the opportunity to see it in operation on Tuesday.

The machine can sort 3,000 packages per hour, not letters, however. Those are still sorted in Syracuse.

Mark Lawrence, a strategic communications specialist for the United States Postal Service, detailed how the machine functions.

“Packages are inducted onto this package sorting machine. As the barcode is scanned initially, it’s computed into the system. And then when it gets to the right drop here, it will fall into the sortation bin for the carrier route for delivery today,” he explained.

Changes at the Pitcher Street Post Office also include enhancements in the lobby, where a self-service kiosk is available for mailing packages and smart lockers can be used for package retrieval.
