Milwaukee Man Sentenced to 38 Years in Federal Prison for Murder of Letter Carrier

Brad D. Schimel, First Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, announced that on October 14, 2026, United States District Court Chief Judge Pamela Pepper sentenced Kevin McCaa (age 40) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to 38 years’ imprisonment, followed by five years of supervised release.

On July 8, 2026, Kevin McCaa pled guilty to the murder of a United States Postal Employee and discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence. As detailed in the court record, veteran United States Postal Service letter carrier Aundre Cross was delivering mail in Milwaukee on the afternoon of December 9, 2022, when he was shot in the head and killed. Evidence established that Kevin McCaa and Charles Ducksworth Jr. were responsible for the homicide. McCaa and Ducksworth surveilled the letter carrier for over 30 minutes prior to the homicide and targeted him because they thought he had stolen their drug package. After the homicide, they threw the firearm in a nearby creek, changed their phone numbers, and disposed of clothing.  McCaa and Ducksworth have been in federal custody since their arrest for these offenses on December 27, 2022.

At the sentencing hearing, Judge Pepper credited the “old-fashioned” investigative work that led to the arrest of McCaa and Ducksworth. Law enforcement utilized warrants for phone record data, automated license plate reader technology and surveillance footage from numerous residences and businesses in the area of the homicide to show the suspects’ activities before and after the homicide. Judge Pepper further determined that the facts of the case reflected that the crime was “premeditated, planned beforehand, with malice aforethought” and called it “incomprehensible.”

“As the Chief Judge noted, these defendants were brought to justice through excellent work by investigators and prosecutors,” said First Assistant U.S. Attorney Schimel. “This was a cold-blooded, senseless murder of a beloved member of his family and the community he served. McCaa will rightly spend virtually the rest of his life in federal prison.”

“Holding those accountable who commit violence against employees of the U.S. Postal Service is our agency’s number one priority. Today’s sentencing hopefully brings a small amount of justice and closure for the family and friends of Aundre Cross. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service would like to thank the Milwaukee Police Department and FBI Milwaukee for their unwavering assistance with this investigation.” stated Nicholas Bucciarelli, Inspector in Charge, Chicago Division of U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

“Kevin McCaa’s heinous crime was deserving of the significant sentence he received for murdering Aundre Cross, an innocent victim who was doing his job as an employee of the U.S. Postal Service. While the sentencing cannot bring Mr. Cross back to his family and friends, hopefully it will be a step forward in the healing process,” said FBI Milwaukee Special Agent in Charge Alan Karr. “The joint efforts of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Milwaukee Police Department, and the FBI in this case exemplifies the importance of law enforcement collaboration. The FBI remains committed to working with our federal, state, and local partners to combat violent crime and seek justice for victims.”

“The Milwaukee Police Department is grateful to all partners who worked together in seeking justice for the victims of this tremendous tragedy. This case also highlights the integral part technology plays in public safety. We thank all the agencies involved that work tirelessly to keep this community safe,” stated Chief Jeffrey Norman of the Milwaukee Police Department.

Co-defendant Ducksworth pled guilty to the same crimes as McCaa and is scheduled for sentencing before Judge Pepper on November 18, 2026.

The investigation of this case was conducted by the Milwaukee Police Department, the United States Postal Inspection Service, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with the assistance of the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office and the Wauwatosa Police Department.  Assistant United States Attorneys Margaret Honrath and Abbey Marzick prosecuted this case.
