Mail carrier charged after fatally backing into 84-year-old man in Outer Banks

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (WAVY) — A mail carrier in Kill Devil Hills was charged in connection with the death of an elderly man after hitting him with her vehicle on May 19, according to the Kill Devil Hills Police Department.

Amy Hudler, 53, was driving a 2021 Mercedes-Benz mail carrier vehicle when she proceeded to back up on Portsmouth Street. While backing up, Hudler hit 84-year-old James Hofler while he was crossing the road to check his mailbox.

Hofler sustained serious injuries and was then transferred to the Outer Banks Health Hospital in Nags Head. Police say Hudler immediately contacted emergency services and remained on scene.

Hofler later died as a result of his injuries on May 22.

An investigation was launched into the incident, in which Hudler was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
