Judge rules Christian Soto, Rockford stabbing suspect, mentally fit to stand trial

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – A judge rules Thursday that Christian Soto, the 22-year-old man accused of killing four people and injuring seven others on March 27, is mentally fit to stand trial.

A mental fitness evaluation was requested by Soto’s defense attorney on April 15. The request came after he yelled “Only God can judge me,” “You are all puppets,” and “You are all serpents; everyone here is a serpent” in court April 2.

Soto, 22, is the sole suspect in the deaths of Romona Schupbach and Jacob Schupbach, mail carrier Jay Larson and East High School student Jenna Newcomb. According to court documents, Soto claimed he was given laced marijuana, which made him paranoid and caused the attack.

Soto’s next court appearance is set for July 24.
