If USPS Runs Out of Cash, Here’s What Could Happen to Your Mail Delivery

The warning was blunt and delivered in public: Postmaster General David Steiner told a House oversight subcommittee in March 2026 that the U.S. Postal Service is less than a year from running out of money. In response, USPS paused contributions to employee retirement accounts, which has delayed the agency from running out of cash this year.

Instead, USPS expects to see cash problems between 2031 and 2034.

This is not a drill. For the over 170 million addresses USPS delivers to six days a week, the consequences are anything but abstract. Retirees and others who rely on the mail for senior benefits have a direct, concrete stake in what happens over the next decade. Here’s what’s driving the crisis, what it could mean for your mailbox, and what Congress can do about it.
