Florida congressman introduces bill to rename post office after Jimmy Buffett

A Florida lawmaker has unveiled a new bill that seeks to memorialize the late musician Jimmy Buffett, who died last year at the age of 76.

The bill would take a preexisting post office located in Key West, Florida, and rename it the “Jimmy Buffett Post Office Building.” The bill was introduced by Rep. Carlos A. Gimenez (R-FL), who praised the late singer as a “champion for our beloved Florida Keys.”

“With songs like Margaritaville and Cheeseburger in Paradise, Jimmy Buffett became an icon to millions of fans known as ‘Parrot Heads’ and embodied the lifestyle of island escapism,” a statement from Gimenez said. “He loved Florida and the Keys and dedicated many efforts to protecting the manatees, supporting the Everglades, and safeguarding the island waterways.”

Gimenez also shared the news of this new bill in a video, during which he said he was confident his colleagues would vote for it.
