A driver was killed early Monday, May 20, in a fiery crash involving a U.S. Postal Service semi truck trailer on northbound Interstate 15 just south of State Route 76, according to the California Highway Patrol and North County Fire Protection District.
The collision was reported at approximately 2:48 a.m., when a black sedan rear-ended a USPS semi truck trailer and became lodged underneath. Witnesses reported the vehicle was smoking and soon became engulfed in flames.
Fire crews arrived to find the car fully involved and were able to keep the fire contained to the vehicle, according to NCFPD spokesperson John Choi. The driver, who has not been identified, died at the scene. Extrication of the body was performed later by the San Diego County Coroner’s Office.
No injuries were reported to the semi truck driver, and the mail being transported was not damaged. Fire crews returned to the scene later in the morning to assist with disentangling the burned vehicle from the trailer.
