Denham Springs mail carrier claims man attacked her due to package frustrations

DENHAM SPRINGS — A USPS mail carrier is recovering after a man on her route allegedly physically and verbally attacked her while she was delivering mail at an apartment complex located near Juban Road.

Carter was at a mailbox center for an apartment complex near Juban Road, putting mail and packages into the boxes for the residents there. That’s when she says a resident, Cody Gaspard, approached her while she was still delivering mail into the boxes and said he’d already been watching and filming her.

She said that what started as a conversation soon turned into racially charged attack in less than 30 seconds with him calling her racial slurs and a “b**ch.”

The man was asking about packages that Carter had not delivered yet. As she walked around the unit of mailboxes, the man followed her, continuously asking about his packages and calling her names, she told UWK.

Carter was finally able to grab her phone and started recording the incident herself, which is what she believes helped lead to Gaspard’s arrest.

“Then my video shows him reach down into the silver boxes, pull out two packages that he wanted to know if they were his or not– he pulls them out and says, ‘I got my packages now.’”

Carter doesn’t remember exactly what she said afterward, but the man turns back around and allegedly lunges at her, grabbing her by the neck. Her phone’s recording cuts out then, but she said the attack lasted for over a minute before anyone ran to her aid.
