How one postal employee is using her 30-year career to cultivate ‘aha’ moments for her colleagues

I grew up in Macon, GA, a place I’m proud to call home. After four years in the U.S. Army, including a deployment in the Gulf War, I returned home seeking new challenges. The U.S. Postal Service seemed different and exciting, so I took the leap and stayed in my community while exploring something new. Thirty years later, my adventure continues.

My postal career began at a processing plant, but soon after I started the opportunity arose to become a city carrier. For the next 25 years, delivering mail was my joy. Every route taught me something new about my community, and I truly enjoyed meeting customers and serving them.

During those years I took on other opportunities that broadened my experience. For 10 years, I trained new carriers at the City Carrier Training Academy at the main Post Office in Macon. I also worked as an address management system specialist, evaluated Post Offices to ensure accurate mailing lists for businesses, filled in as a computerized forwarding system specialist to streamline forwarding systems, assisted a postmaster and served as a manager of Post Office operations. Each role deepened my appreciation for our mission and my pride in serving.

About six years ago, I was asked to work with the Postal Customer Council here in Macon. During that time, I introduced small- and medium-size businesses to our products and services. That role really reinforced for me how deeply the Postal Service connects all communities, so when a position opened up to educate other postal employees about the vital role, we all play in making USPS stronger, I jumped at it.

As a business lead development specialist, my colleagues are my customers. I am using my knowledge of the Postal Service to help more than 19,000 postal employees of all levels — from veteran managers to people just starting their career — understand that they are more than just their job. To our customers, they are USPS. Their professionalism, their positive attitude and their graciousness are why people come back to us again and again.

Helping my colleagues understand that they are bigger than their individual role — that they are more than a carrier, a clerk, a mail handler, a supervisor or a postmaster — is a real joy for me. They are the true revenue generators for USPS, and I love seeing that ‘aha’ moment when my colleagues realize they play a big part in making our future happen.
