EVANSVILLE – Thousands of pieces of Evansville mail were delivered late in May and June after the U.S. Postal Service reportedly prevented area mail carriers from working more than 10 hours in a day and earning too much overtime, multiple USPS sources told the Courier & Press.
The move was antithetical to the post office’s mission and could have violated the National Association of Letter Carriers union contract, USPS policy, and U.S. code, they say. It also potentially delayed some customers from receiving important pieces of mail − everything from social security checks to energy assistance forms.
But in a statement to the Courier & Press, USPS spokeswoman Susan Wright said “there is no policy in place as you have described.”
“And there are no ongoing delivery delays in Evansville,” she said.
“Ongoing” is key. One Evansville postal worker, who asked not to be identified for fear of retribution, told the Courier & Press the curtailments ended in July, either because of improved staffing or smaller batches of mail. But they were happening in late May and June.
The postal worker said the union kept written record of the number of delayed deliveries. The union also filed grievances with USPS leadership.
This isn’t a claim, this is a nationwide policy under the Steiner/Tulino regime. Reports are coming in from across the country that mail is being intentionally delayed. Is this what the BOG wants and why is it being done? Why on earth would they hand out bonuses for delaying mail as a matter of policy?
