After 27 years on the route, St. Louis letter carrier retires during USPS struggles

ST. LOUIS — For decades, Marilyn Krieger has been more than a letter carrier. She has been a familiar smile, a friendly face, and a steady presence in the Benton Park neighborhood.

Now, at 64, Krieger is retiring, leaving behind a community that has relied on her dedication, and highlighting the growing challenges facing the U.S. Postal Service.

Krieger joined the Postal Service in 1998, delivering letters and packages to residents ranging from newborns to lifelong neighbors.

“Everybody was respected. There was a camaraderie. It was great because we bought letters from grandma. Packages. Back then, we delivered AOLs in a tin can,” she said, reflecting on the “glory days.”

But the job has changed. Krieger said she often worked long hours and missed out on family time, though she remained committed to the route.
