2 years after fatal fire, Bausman post office remains closed

Brooks Brubaker, who has lived in the community for 70 years, wrote to The Watchdog recently to ask when, or if, the post office will reopen.

“Millersville (post office) is available, but Bausman is a convenience to the area,” Brubaker wrote in an email. He said he remembers when the building was a local store, with lawnmowers displayed out front, adding, “I’m just wondering if there is hope of it reopening, or has its time passed?”

After contacting township officials and the U.S. Postal Service, The Watchdog doesn’t have much concrete information to share.

John Donnelly, the township’s director of planning and zoning, said the building passed all required code inspections and received a certificate of occupancy in September.

Donnelly noted that the township’s involvement in the repairs is limited unless a tenant wants to change the use of the property.

“I have had no communications with the USPS regarding their timeline to occupy or reopen the post office,” he said.

Mark Wahl, a strategic communications specialist for the U.S. Postal Service, told The Watchdog that he has been in contact with the Bausman postmaster but that there is still no reopening date.

The building is owned by Levi Fisher, who rents it to the Postal Service.

The Bausman post office closed after a February 2024 fire caused extensive damage to the Rosedale Avenue property and took the life of a person living in the upstairs apartment.
