Each year in October, the US Postal Service releases a semipostal stamp—one that consumers buy at a higher price to direct funds to a cause—in support of breast cancer research at the National Institutes of Health and the Defense Department’s medical research program. The program has raised more than $98 million since its launch in 1998.
This year, the Mashpee Post Office set an ambitious goal to sell 25,000 breast cancer stamps, and currently is ranked first in Massachusetts and fifth in the country in sales of the breast cancer research stamps. Mashpee clerks and carriers have rallied to sell these stamps as a way to support loved ones who have been touched by this disease. Mashpee USPS has sold 18,848 stamps so far.
“The 28 employees of the Mashpee Post Office really appreciate the support that the community has shown over the years. Breast cancer has touched the lives of so many friends and family,” Jacques Tompkins, Mashpee Postmaster, said.
