USPS unveils this year’s U.S. Flag stamp

The Postal Service dedicated its latest U.S. Flag stamp during an annual festival in Three Oaks, MI, that celebrates Old Glory.

“An enduring emblem of freedom, national unity and patriotic spirit, the flag of the United States has flown proudly stateside, abroad and even on the surface of the moon,” said Donald Dombrow Jr., the Postal Service’s Michigan 2 District manager, who spoke at the ceremony.

The new stamp — available in booklets and panes of 20 and coils of 100, 300 and 10,000 — shows the flag fluttering in the breeze against a white background. It was designed by Antonio Alcalá, an art director for USPS, and features an image by photographer Doug Haight.

In his remarks, Haight recalled snapping the image at a vacation property co-owned by his wife’s family.

“I mostly take photos of people. It was serendipity that I happened to take a photo of this particular flag,” he said.

The ceremony, held outside an historic movie theater, drew 250 attendees and was part of a weekend festival in Three Oaks, a village of about 1,300 people in the state’s southwest corner.

Jason Niemzyk, a Three Oaks Village Council member, said the community was proud to be the site of this year’s U.S. Flag stamp dedication.

“If you ever need your patriotism button re-charged, come to Three Oaks. It makes me proud to know we are a community that our young children will stand up and salute the flag. A ceremony like this gives us a moment to reflect on the freedoms we hold dear,” he said.
