HOUSTON — The issue of thieves with counterfeit keys stealing mail in Houston and surrounding suburbs has become an epidemic.
KHOU 11 has reported on several cases of crooks breaking into neighborhood or apartment complex mailboxes in recent months and stealing stacks of mail. It’s gotten so bad the United States Postal Inspection Service started offering $100,000 rewards.
On Thursday, DPS troopers said they put three suspected mail thieves behind bars after a traffic stop in Houston. They also recovered dozens of stolen credit and debit cards, fake ID’s, ledgers, suspected drugs and counterfeit arrow keys that can be used to open community collection boxes.
The troopers discovered the loot when they stopped a pickup truck that had been reported stolen.
They said the three suspects face a number of felony charges.
