MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A former postal clerk who admitted to stealing business checks as part of a theft ring totaling millions of dollars will go to prison for five years, a judge ruled Tuesday.
Kalaijha Tomeco Rainier Lewis pleaded guilty in October 2023 to conspiracy to commit bank fraud and theft by a postal employee. She admitted that she took stacks of business checks over a roughly three-month period in 2023 from the downtown Mobile post office on St. Joseph Street where she worked as a clerk.
Lewis then sold the checks to Brian Chrisopher Williams II, who also pleaded guilty and is scheduled to be sentenced next week.
Williams admitted that he and others sold the checks online through an encrypted messaging platform called Telegram. The total value of the stolen checks posted on the channel exceeded $17.7 million, according to court records.
