HERMON, Maine (WABI) – Hermon Fire and the U.S. Air Force Fire Department responded to an interesting event at Morgan Hill Event center Tuesday morning.
While making mail deliveries, the driver of a US Postal Service vehicle noticed something unusual — smoke coming from the engine compartment.
The driver pulled over, got out and called 911.
Hermon Fire says they had to cut the vehicle open to extinguish the blaze.
“Obviously any time we are using rotary powers saws, there is a danger to our members, with flying sparks, metal but we do have to force entry into the vehicle to completely extinguish the fire,” said Cody Sullivan, Hermon fire chief.
Authorities say there were no injuries.
The USPS says postal inspectors will take control of what mail remains, and any items with a legible address will be delivered to the customer with a notice of what happened.
They also say customers farther along the route will be notified their mail may have been impacted.
