La Grange, NC post office goes weeks without AC

LA GRANGE, N.C. (WITN) – The post office on Caswell Street in La Grange has been without air conditioning for more than three weeks, according to a post office worker.

The temperature in La Grange rose to the mid-90s on Thursday, and inside the post office, it was just as hot, with temperatures reaching 91 degrees Thursday evening, as reported by a post office worker.

The post office worker, who couldn’t speak on camera, mentioned that they have been attempting to contact higher management and even the property owner since the air conditioning went out, but they still haven’t received any response.

Residents of La Grange are not only concerned for the employees inside but also for themselves and others when having to wait in lines.

“It’s a shame for the staff to have to work in those type of conditions. It’s hot, and whatever needs to be done needs to be done right now,” says La Grange resident Jean Kittrell.

“I think they should take care of their people a little more better than they do. If they say that something is wrong with the AC then they need to fix it,” says La Grange resident Warren Edwards.

“I think what they need to do is get this thing fixed before someone ends up being sick that works here, or even someone old coming in and getting sick or having a heat stroke in the building. Especially if there’s a long line and had to wait because of how hot it is,” says La Grange resident Connie Barfield.

WITN contacted the New York real estate corporation Postal Realty, the property owner of the post office.

We were informed that they would discuss the issue with property management, but we haven’t received any updates on the timing of the repairs.

The dangerous heat persists in Eastern Carolina, with Friday and Saturday being designated as First Alert Weather Days.
