$1,200 for Breakfast for Seven: IG Questions Some Postal Governors’ Meeting Expenses

Costs of operating the Postal Service Board of Governors more than doubled in 2025 vs. 2024 from some $428,000 to $932,000, with spending on “professional and other services” increasing by $550,000 partly offset by a reduction in salary costs due to vacancies on the board, an inspector general audit has said.

While meeting expenses also decreased somewhat, in a sample the IG found two trips where governors were reimbursed for three room rates from about $600 to $900 per night “from 117 percent to 358 percent over the General Services Administration rate” for those locations.

“Additionally, we identified seven catered breakfasts out of 21 meeting expenses for meals ranging between $900 and $1,200, where there were only seven attendees per event,” it said.

Governors receive a salary of $30,000 a year, plus $300 a day for not more than up to 42 days of meetings each year and are reimbursed for their expenses to attend meetings.
