USPS responds after woman claims she received package covered in blood

GEORGETOWN, Tenn. (WKRC) – The United States Postal Service has responded after a woman claimed she received a package that was covered in blood.

According to WTVC, Hollie Hogan of Georgetown, Tennessee, said she became frozen in shock after stepping out to collect a package that had been delivered by USPS and noticing that it was covered in what appeared to be a red substance.

“I walked out and I saw it, and I kind of looked down,” Hogan said when speaking with WTVC. “I was like, I don’t think I want to touch this. So I was like, what do I do now?”

Hogan told the outlet that she contacted the post office almost immediately and was told that “they deliver regardless.”

When contacted by WTVC’s reporters, USPS issued the following statement:

“The safety of our customers and employees is of paramount importance to the Postal Service. We are charged with delivering all mailed items with which we are entrusted. There are procedures in place to properly handle mail and packages that appear to have unidentified substances on the exterior of the envelope or package. Generally, postal personnel would first isolate the item, and it would be delivered in a clear plastic bag with a notice to the customer alerting them to the substance.”

“In this specific case, it was determined that the package was safe to deliver. Regarding next steps for the customer, they have the option of returning the package or, if they choose to open it, using safety precautions such as wearing gloves and washing their hands after opening the item. We apologize to our customer for any inconvenience or concern this delivery may have caused.”
