SPRINGFIELD, ILL (WICS/WRSP) — The United States Postal Service’s plan to relocate part of its mail processing operations to St. Louis has sparked concerns among workers about potential mail delays in Central Illinois.
Johnny Bishop, president of the American Postal Workers Union Springfield branch, clarified that only the cancellation part of the Springfield processing plant, where mail is stamped to prevent reuse, is slated for the move. However, he said USPS has not provided any updates on the timing or certainty of the relocation.
“Even if you walked in and mailed it here at Springfield, it’s not going to get canceled here,” Bishop said. “It’s going to get sent to St. Louis, it’s going to sit there until they find time to cancel it. It will get loaded on a truck and sent back to Springfield to be delivered then.”
