The U.S. Postal Service is rolling out a new service called USPS Local Xchange, which uses smart lockers to facilitate safer transactions for people buying and selling items online.
The service is designed for platforms like Facebook Marketplace, where buyers and sellers in the same area can avoid meeting in person.
Instead, they can use USPS smart lockers. Customers book the service through Click-N-Ship, drop off their item at a USPS location with smart lockers, and the buyer receives a QR code via email to retrieve the item.
USPS said the service is being rolled out but did not provide a specific timeline for its availability in Sacramento. Once launched, the service will cost $5.51 per transaction.
“Anytime you have an opportunity to safely do those purchases or that sale I think it’s good for the community,” said Justin Boyd with the Sacramento Police department.
