USPS Chief Outlines Coming Request for Financial, Regulatory Relief; Universal Service “Unsustainable”

Postmaster General David Steiner has provided the outline of an upcoming request to Congress for financial and regulatory relief, saying that while the USPS is continuing to take actions to increase income and control costs, “self-help alone will not close the gap in the short term.”

“We must see broader relief from outdated statutory and regulatory constraints — many of which were set more than five decades ago — that limit our ability to operate like the modern enterprise the country expects us to be,” he said at the most recent Board of Governors meeting.
