U.S. Department of Justice to decide on death penalty option in case of Warren mail carrier shooting

Attorneys are considering the death penalty in the case of two suspects accused of murdering a mail carrier in Warren last year.

According to federal court records, prosecutors are considering whether or not suspects Kaprise Sledge and Thomas Sledge would be eligible for the death penalty should they be convicted for the murder of mail carrier Jonte Davis back in March of 2024.

During a telephone conference Wednesday, it was revealed that the defense is putting together a mitigation package to try and prevent the death penalty from being implemented.

The U.S. Department of Justice will make the final decision on whether or not to make this a capital case.
Davis was shot and killed in his mail truck at the corner of Scott Street NE and Olive Avenue NE. It is believed that the two suspects knew Davis.

The shooting was followed by a months-long search for the suspects. The two were eventually found and arrested in October of 2024. They are charged with one count each of murder of an officer and employee of the United States and discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence
