NEW YORK — The U.S. Postal Service today celebrated the remarkable contributions of Judge Constance Baker Motley (1921–2005), a civil rights pioneer and judiciary trailblazer, as the 47th honoree in the Black Heritage stamp series.
According to the American Philatelic Society, in the mid-1970s, Clarence L. Irving, founder of the Black American Heritage Foundation, suggested that the Postal Service increase African American representation on U.S. stamps.
The stamp is part of the Lunar New Year series, which honors an annual observance in many Asian cultures and the United States.
The ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Eastern at the Constance Baker Motley Recreation Center at 348 E. 54th St. The speakers will include Anton Hajjar, a member of the USPS Board of Governors.
The first Love stamp was introduced in 1973 and billed as a “Special Stamp for Someone Special.” It featured artist Robert Indiana’s iconic 1960s Love design, which he previously rendered as a painting and a sculpture.
