Starkey retires from the United States Post Office after 30 years of service

LUSK – After 30 years of sorting mail, working at other Post Offices and generally helping out where she could, Cindy Starkey is looking forward to finally retiring.

Around Christmas of 2002, Starkey and her husband, Rand, decided to move to Lusk. Starkey was able to transfer from her postal job in Fremont, Nebraska. They have been living here since 2003. While the venue was different, many of the faces remained the same.

“We moved far enough from Nebraska and thought we would have a fresh start,” said Starkey. “We didn’t think we would know anybody and then we started meeting people that we knew from back in Nebraska.”

The selection of Lusk was not the result of meticulous deliberation. Instead, Starkey simply dropped a pencil on a map and allowed spontaneity to make the final decision. The pencil landed on Wyoming. There was one job opening in Lusk and the other in Rawlins. Starkey and her husband chose Lusk.

As a transplant from Arlington, Nebraska, Starkey was no stranger to the small town milieu.
