A mandate will also apply to New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day for some classes of employees.
ATLANTA — Some employees at metro Atlanta’s USPS Regional Processing & Distribution Center in Palmetto will have to work the holidays, the Postal Service confirmed Thursday.
11Alive’s Liza Lucas was provided a handout from the facility stating that all employees classified under the title of mail handler assistant or postal support employee will be working Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. They’ll also be working New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
“We are currently in our busiest time of year, so we are employing measures to ensure we can process and deliver all holiday mail and packages on time, including flexing our workforce,” USPS said in a statement to 11Alive.
The holiday hours come as 11Alive reported Thursday that many employees are still concerned over space at the facility and backlogs of trucks waiting to unload shipments.
Mail delays and lost packages has persisted in Georgia for months, tied to the opening of the new regional processing and distribution center in Palmetto.
