If you get mail in downtown Salem, you’ve probably seen Eric Euen.
Euen has been one of Salem’s downtown walking mail carriers for decades. For years, he has traced the same route, clad in the two-toned U.S. Postal Service uniform. He said the job keeps him physically and emotionally healthy, and he’s not ready to hang it up just yet.
Aug. 4 marked 50 years of Euen’s government service work with 47 years as a mail carrier and three years in the U.S. army.
He started his USPS career after being hired in Inglewood, California, on his 21st birthday in 1979. In 1989, he came to Salem after a stint in Albany. Euen said the changes he’s seen over the years are innumerable.
