Rural America slighted by new U.S. Postal Service plan

The Delivering for America Plan, according to the USPS website, is “guiding the transformation of the United States Postal Service from an organization in financial and operational crisis to one that is self-sustaining and high performing.”

In this plan, there is a subsection called the Regional Transportation Optimization (RTO) plan, which aims to reduce the number of delivery trips and mail collections at most USPS facilities farther than 50 miles from a processing plant.

“Take the post office here in my hometown of Appleton City,” says Garrett Hawkins, Missouri Farm Bureau president. “Instead of seeing a truck come from Kansas City twice a day in the morning and in the afternoon, they are now eliminating that afternoon pickup. So, we will only see a truck from the processing center once a day.”
