OPM reduced a backlog of retirement applications over the fiscal year just concluded, with overall average processing time also declining, largely due the shift over that time from paper-based to digital applications.
As of the September end of fiscal year 2026, OPM had some 8,800 applications on hand, down from the 34,600 as of last October. That number had spiked last fall with a wave of applications from employees who accepted deferred resignation offers last year; in most cases, those required separating by September 30, although some were extended through the end of the year.
The total rose monthly until passing 65,200 in February of this year, reflecting both the deferred resignation impact and the annual surge of retirement applications around the turn of the year for reasons including employees wishing to maximize payouts for unused annual leave.
