U.S. Representative Jimmy Gomez has urged the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to suspend the closure of the Chinatown Contract Postal Unit in Los Angeles. Gomez stated that the unit serves as a vital resource for local residents, especially those facing mobility and language barriers, saying, “Shutting it down would force vulnerable residents to travel further for their mail services.”

Peter Kwong, the unit’s operator, expressed concerns that while the closure may seem financially sound for USPS, it could lead to greater costs and community disruption. Gomez’s letter to USPS requests a community impact assessment and calls for a re-evaluation of the decision, emphasizing the necessity of maintaining accessible postal services.

Gomez highlighted the importance of the facility’s role in ensuring postal access for residents who rely on it, as many long-time customers would have no alternatives. He committed to continuing efforts to hold USPS accountable regarding cuts that may adversely affect local communities.
