Prosecutors oppose bond release of man who allegedly killed Warren postal worker

Federal prosecutors in the case against one of the men accused of killing a US Postal worker in Warren in March is opposed to his request to be released on bond until his trial.

Defendant Thomas Sledge asked the court in November to revoke its decision to detain him and release him on bond pending the resolution of the case.

The government filed its response on Thursday in the US District Court for the Northern District of Ohio Eastern Division, opposing the motion for release.

The filing for opposing Sledge’s release stated the following reasons:

  • Sledge’s lengthy criminal history
  • Sledge’s previous crimes committed while on court supervision
  • Nature and circumstances of the premeditated murder charge against Sledge

The court filing also stated that “the charge of murder carries a reubttable [sic] presumption in favor of detention.”

The plaintiff in the case said the court must consider the nature of the circumstances, the weight of the evidence against Sledge, the history and characteristics of the defendant, and the danger to the community.
