BALTIMORE, Md. — A Harford County mail carrier picked up a special delivery of his own after winning a $50,000 top prize in the Maryland Lottery’s Pick 5 game, lottery officials announced.
The Aberdeen resident, who routinely uses family birthdays to choose his lottery numbers, claimed his winnings at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore on Aug. 6.
His $1 straight-bet ticket for the July 21 evening drawing matched the winning combination of 7-2-4-0-3.
The postal employee said he discovered the win while at work and needed a second pair of eyes to confirm the results on his phone.
“I looked up the results on my phone and could not believe it when I saw my numbers,” the winner said in a statement provided by the lottery. “I had to ask a co-worker to check to see if I was seeing things.”
While the player noted he has previously won smaller prizes playing Pick 3 and Pick 4 games over the years, he described the five-figure payout as a completely different experience.
