World Post Day, an annual commemoration of mail’s role in the everyday lives of people and businesses, as well as its contribution to global social and economic development, will be observed Oct. 9.

The theme of this year’s event is “Post for Planet,” which focuses on how national postal services can take a lead in mitigating climate change.

USPS made its commitment to addressing climate change clear by publishing its first-ever Climate Action Plan last year.

International Postal Affairs, a USPS department, manages the organization’s global relations and policy development with the Universal Postal Union (UPU), a specialized United Nations agency that facilitates the exchange of international mail among 192 member countries. UPU sponsors World Post Day.

The department’s Blue page has more information, while the United Nations website has an overview of World Post Day.

World Post Day was first celebrated in 1969 during the UPU Congress in Tokyo to mark the anniversary of the union’s establishment in 1874.
