A woman is accused of walking into a South Kitsap post office last month and stealing bags of mail while a man with her threatened a postal employee who tried to stop them.

In an interview with Kitsap County sheriff’s detectives, Kandis Lynn Mello, 42, allegedly confessed to stealing mail from the Bethel Avenue post office on Oct. 17 and the National Avenue post office in Bremerton on Oct. 14, as well as from post offices in Bellevue, Kirkland and Tukwila.

An investigator working for the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office wrote Mello and others drove into a secured area at the National Avenue post office and stole mail from a loading dock. Thieves made off with 2,135 pieces of mail from 981 people, according to Kitsap County Superior Court records.

Mello is charged with accomplice to second-degree robbery for the Oct. 17 incident at the Bethel Avenue post office, second-degree burglary for the thefts on Oct. 14 from the National Avenue post office, and one count of second-degree identity theft.
