Washington D.C. (October 12, 2021)—On Friday, October 15, 2021 at 11 a.m. CT / 12 p.m. ET, Rep. Gerald E. Connolly, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Government Operations, will hold a field hearing in Chicago, Illinois to examine dramatic reductions in the U.S. Postal Service’s delivery performance in the city and nationally.
Since Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s tenure began in June 2020, the Postal Service’s on-time delivery performance has significantly declined, according to a recent audit from the USPS Office of Inspector General (OIG). The OIG found that “[t]he Postal Service only met service performance targets for three of 33 products in Fiscal Year 2020.”
In Chicago, service standards have plummeted, with First-Class mail designated for three-to-five-day delivery arriving on time only 75.7% of the time. The hearing will examine the root causes of these service delays and how the Postal Service plans to address them, while highlighting the need for robust congressional oversight.
