A USPS representative sent NewsChannel 13 this statement:
“On March 31, 2019 there was a fatal accident on the NYS Thruway that involved the transportation of Postal Service mail by one of our contractors.
In this rare occurrence, mail was exposed to extensive fire and water damage. The impacted mail predominately consisted of letters but did include some magazines, large business envelopes and small sized packages. The truck was ¼ full.
The Postal Service, in collaboration with the Postal Inspection Service, is still painstakingly going through this damaged mail and we continue to do everything in our power to make the customer whole. Despite our best efforts, some mail was or will not be recoverable.
The Albany General Mail Facility to which this mail was destined, employs approximately 700 workers, operates 24 hours a day year around and processes on average 2.4 million pieces of mail daily.”
