Suspect apprehended in Wednesday shooting in Longmont

The ex-girlfriend of 33-year-old mail carrier Jason Schaefer — shot and killed in southwest Longmont shortly after noon Wednesday — has been arrested in connection with the postal worker’s death.

Devan Schreiner, 26, was arrested for first-degree murder, according to a news release from Longmont Police Services. The arrest was made by Longmont Police and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

Schreiner was identified as the victim’s ex-girlfriend in the news release. An arrest affidavit indicates Schaefer had been involved in a custody battle with Schreiner.

Schreiner was booked at the Longmont Police Department and later transported to the Boulder County Jail. An advisement hearing for Schreiner has been set for Oct. 19, according to a court clerk.
