Sheriff’s Office identifies husband, wife found dead in Pittsylvania Co. home

After receiving a call from a concerned party requesting a well-being check on their friend around 1 a.m., deputies said they arrived in the 17000 block of Callands Road in Axton on Monday.

They said they discovered a man and woman believed to be husband and wife with a gun near their bodies.

The sheriff’s office identified them as 29-year-old Brittany Cioffa and 38-year-old Thomas Cioffa.

Pittsylvania County Sheriff Mike Taylor confirmed the address where officers responded. On Monday evening, he said his office doesn’t know exactly what led to the shooting, and they could only speculate with what was found at the scene.

He said an autopsy should be performed Tuesday or Wednesday and the firearm will be taken to a lab for testing.

“Hopefully between the autopsy and the forensics some of the answers will come out,” Taylor said.

Sands and Shelton identified the couple as Tom and Brittany Cioffa.

Brittany delivered mail in Henry County and worked at a Dollar General in Axton and Tom sold cars in Danville, they said.

“They were very well-liked,” Sands said.

Shelton said they rented the house from her for about three years.

At the property down a long driveway off Callands Road, three dogs milled about and a couple of pieces of sliced crime scene tape littered the grass next to the gravel.
