Sens. King, Collins: Privatizing post office is a bad idea
BANGOR – Maine’s two U.S. senators are sometimes on opposite sides of the aisle politically, but they agree that privatizing the U.S. Postal Service is a bad idea.
Republican Sen. Susan Collins and independent Sen. Angus King said on Monday they are joining a group of more than 20 senators in reintroducing a bill opposing privatizing the service.
The two senators say privatization would mean higher prices and reduced services for customers, and that would be especially bad in rural communities such as those in Maine.
Collins is often described as a moderate Republican and King is an independent who caucuses with Democrats. They say the bipartisan support for maintaining government funding of the postal service shows the issue transcends party lines. Members of both parties support the resolution.
