Postal service offers help after murder/suicide involving worker

The postal service is offering local employees help after the death of a 33-year-old worker, who is believed to have shot his girlfriend and killed her son before fatally wounding himself in their Miami Twp. apartment Friday.

Army veteran Jovonie L. McClendon Jr. was employed as a carrier at the Washington Twp. postal facility since August 2017, the United States Postal Service confirmed.

“We express our deepest sympathies to the families involved,” the USPS said in a statement released Tuesday. “Employee Assistance is being offered to our employees at that office.

Di’eshia Patterson, 27, remains at Kettering Medical Center in critical condition from the shooting on Sagebrook Drive, authorities said.

Her son, 6-year-old Carter Clemons, was pronounced dead at the scene after McClendon shot himself on Facebook Live just after 11:30 a.m., authorities said.

Services stemming from the shooting have not been set.

“The United States Postal Inspection Service is investigating and coordinating with local authorities,” the postal service statement added.

McClendon died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.
