Postal police union wants more mailbox patrols

The theft of mail from a blue United States Postal Service mail collection box in Wauwatosa last week is shining new light on a growing problem across the country. Mail theft is skyrocketing.

Wauwatosa police captured mail thieves in the act last week after they crashed their car during a police pursuit, revealing bags of stolen mail.

“Right now, we have a mail theft epidemic on our hands, it’s spreading like wildfire, and quite frankly, the postal inspection service is doing very little to prevent it,” said Frank Albergo, the National President of the postal police officer’s union.

He said in an interview with WISN 12 News Wednesday that the role of postal police officers has been diminished in recent years to the detriment of mail carriers and customers.
