Post office shuts down over lease standoff

The U.S. Postal Service announced Friday that USPS operations at the West Burlington Post Office at 2353 State Highway 80 in West Burlington will be suspended until further notice because of the inability to secure lease agreements with the lessor. All retail operations will be suspended as of close of business Saturday.

According to a media release, Post Office box customers in West Burlington can retrieve their mail at the Burlington Flats Post Office at 6047 State Highway 51 in Burlington Flats from 8 a.m. to noon Mondays through Fridays and 8 to 11 a.m. Saturdays.

Customers of West Burlington receiving mail delivery at their homes or businesses may claim any undeliverable mail articles at the Burlington Flats Post Office.

Full retail services are also available at the Edmeston Post Office at 3 West St. in Edmeston and the Hartwick Post Office at 3095 County Highway 11 in Hartwick.

Officials said there has been no decision to permanently discontinue operations in West Burlington. Locations for a new retail outlet are being explored, the release said.
