PMG offers Public Service Recognition Week message to Postal employees

The following message is from Postmaster General Megan J. Brennan:

The nation will mark Public Service Recognition Week from May 5-11 this year.

First celebrated 35 years ago in 1985, the first full week in May is when cities, counties, states, federal agencies and service organizations across the United States join together to honor public servants and connect Americans with their government.

During this special week, I want to express my appreciation to you and your more than 634,000 dedicated Postal Service colleagues for your work to fulfill our mission. You are the face of public service in your community, all year round.

You strengthen our communities. You connect America, you drive commerce and you are good neighbors. You serve the public every day.

But most importantly, you don’t hesitate to go the extra mile to serve the public, and it is that generous spirit that truly defines the Postal Service workforce.

Americans will see that spirit in action at the end of Public Service Recognition Week on May 11, with the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive. Last year, USPS employees collected 71.6 million pounds of food from 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. territories.

You go above and beyond the call of duty in many ways. You know our customers and are often the first to notify emergency responders when someone is sick or injured, a child is lost, or a fire is spotted.

When our communities are affected by wildfires, floods, snowstorms, hurricanes and other acts of nature, the resumption of mail delivery is a meaningful sight for customers rebuilding after a disaster.

Whether you work in delivery, processing, retail, finance, technology or another area of our organization, our customers are constantly reminded of the Postal Service’s indispensable role in the national community.
