MEDIA— “I know what Lou Gehrig meant when he said ‘I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth,’” Media mail carrier Matthew Heavens stated this week.
Heavens, a native of Media, will finish a 42-year career with the U.S. Postal Service on Saturday.
Heaven’s career began in 1978. During a time period when he was actively looking for a new job opportunity, he happened to run into Ed Matthews, his former pee wee football coach from the Rose Tree Colts. Matthews was also the Media Postmaster at the time. His former coach encouraged Heavens to apply for a postal service job, and the rest is history.
In addition to being a longtime carrier in everybody’s hometown, Heavens has also had routes in Wallingford and Springfield.
“The customers are the reason why I have always enjoyed this job,” Heavens commented. “Media and the world have gone through many changes over time but one thing never changes. The kindness and generosity of our community towards me and my fellow carriers is beyond words.”
