Man who killed U.S. postal carrier in fiery crash, sentenced to 20 days in jail

ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI — A Plainwell man responsible for the Jan. 6 death of a U.S. postal worker was sentenced Thursday to 20 days in jail and one year of probation.

Spencer Evan Baird, 36, pleaded guilty to the original charge of a moving violation causing death. There was no plea agreement in the case, Allegan County Prosecutor Myrene Koch said.

Allegan County District Court Judge Joseph Skocelas also ordered Baird to pay court costs, restitution and fines.

Allegan County Sheriff’s Capt. Chris Kuhn said Baird worked third shift and was probably driving on a limited amount of sleep. There were no drugs or alcohol in his system and it was determined he had been driving the speed limit and wearing a seatbelt, Kuhn said.

“This is tragic, certainly for the family and the loved ones of our victim in this case,” Koch told MLive.
