ANN ARBOR, MI – A man convicted of killing a retired Ann Arbor postal worker who went out of his way to help those in need is going to prison.

Washtenaw County Trial Judge Carol Kuhnke sentenced Christopher Michael Cheatham Tuesday, Jan. 4, to serve 18-40 years in prison for the slaying of Richard “Dick” Fortune more than two years ago.

Cheatham, 27, was found guilty by a jury Nov. 16 of second-degree murder after a week-long trial where prosecutors presented evidence Fortune, 71, was killed in a rent dispute with Cheatham.

He was also found guilty of two felony counts of stealing a financial transaction device and one misdemeanor count of receiving and concealing stolen property less than $200.
