David Prater, 62, of Bartram Avenue, a U.S. Post Office employee, filed for accelerated rehabilitation on Wednesday.
Under accelerated rehabilitation, a pretrial program, Prater, who is charged with fourth-degree sexual assault and disorderly conduct, would not plead guilty to the charges but could get up to two years’ probation. If he commits no other crimes during that probation, the original charges against him will be dismissed.
On Jan. 9, a 57-year-old woman complained to police that she had been sexually assaulted by her letter carrier who she said looks like “Santa Claus.”
Police said the woman told them that Prater had come to her home to deliver mail. When she opened the door, Prater grabbed her and kissed her then stuck his hand under her shirt, police said.
Police said the woman screamed and ordered Prater out of her house. She then called police.
While officers were talking to the woman at her home, police said Prater showed up again.
Police said Prater, who has white hair and a white beard, claimed because it was around the holidays he had kissed the woman in a “friendly manner.” Police said Prater admitted his arm might have inadvertently brushed against her chest, but he denied sexually assaulting her.
