Mail Carrier Sentenced for Opening Mail Without Authority

Acting United States Attorney Jan Sharp announced that Derrick G. Dawdy, age 37, of Central City, Iowa, was sentenced today in Omaha, Nebraska by Chief United States District Judge Robert F. Rossiter, Jr. to two years of probation for opening and destroying mail not directed to him.  Dawdy must also pay $166.67 in restitution.

Dawdy was a mail carrier in Omaha.  In late 2020, he failed to deliver a number of parcels, some of which he opened.
He also failed to deliver more than 350 pieces of mail and periodicals.  The misconduct came to light when several customers complained in late November 2020 that expected parcels had not arrived.  The items were recovered, but the Postal Service was unable to match the contents of opened parcels with the intended recipients.

This case was investigated by the United States Postal Inspection Service.
