CINCINNATI (WXIX) – A United States Postal Service worker is hospitalized Monday night after a crash in East Price Hill.

The mail carrier was out of his USPS vehicle when he was hit by a car, according to Cincinnati police.

The car involved in the crash stopped at the scene.

EMS transported the mail carrier to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Police at the scene described the injuries as non-life-threatening.

Said witness Christian Schmit, “I saw the postman on the ground with a gash in his head.”

Schmit was with his 9-year-old son waiting for the light to turn green when they saw the mailman, whom they say was crossing the street, get hit by the car.

“The mailman went up in the air,” Schmit said. “All of his letters went up in the air, everything he was carrying.”

The car was towed away with a shattered windshield.

Schmit calls West 8th Street a menacing stretch of road where crashes are the norm.

“The speed with which the man that hit him was driving, and the fact that he ran the red light—he absolutely ran the red light, and didn’t even try to stop—so I don’t know if he was distracted. There was no screeching of brakes. He did not apply his brakes. Hit the man at full speed. Full speed,” he said.

The investigation is ongoing.
